Dr. John Alvin Pickel, Jr.

February 5, 1950 — April 1, 2025

John Alvin Pickel Jr. MD, age 75, of Mansfield, TX, passed away peacefully on April 1st, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. John was born on February 5th, 1950, in Lafayette, Indiana, to John and Betty Pickel.

John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and will be remembered for his spirited, firecracker personality that brought warmth and joy to those around him. He had a deep passion for gardening, hunting, fishing, golfing, and reading, and he especially cherished traveling with his family. Above all, his greatest joy was spending time with his four beloved grandchildren.

John first attended the US Military Academy at West Point. He then graduated from the University of Indiana, where he completed both his undergraduate and medical degrees. He went on to complete his OB/GYN residency at UT Southwestern/Parkland Hospital. In 1979, John began his medical career, dedicating himself to serving his patients with compassion and care. In 1985, he founded Omega OB/GYN, where he spent over 40 years in the field of women’s health. John’s dedication to his patients and his unwavering commitment to his community earned him the deep admiration and respect of all who knew him.

John was a proud original member of the CONSAFOS club and the old man pancake bible study group.

John Pickel is survived by his loving wife, Kim Pickel; his sisters, Karen Meyers and Cindy Nelson; his daughter, Dr. Stephanie Pickel; his sons, Matt and Andrew Pickel; his son-in-law, Matt Rosen; his granddaughters, Taylar and Peyton Rosen; his son-in-law, Shayne Ferguson; and his grandsons, Brody and Brandon Ferguson; and his dog Buddie. He is also survived by countless friends and patients whose lives he touched. John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Betty Pickel, and his daughter, Amanda Ferguson.

John’s kindness, humor, and unwavering dedication to his family and community will be dearly missed. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he impacted both personally and professionally.
