Family & friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, November 18 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Skyvue Funeral Home, 7220 FM 1187 Mansfield, Texas for Joan Hagler who suffered a heart attack and passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2021.
Joan was born and raised in Rendon, Texas. She was educated in Mansfield public schools and graduated from Mansfield High School in 1963.
Joan obtained her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Central Oklahoma.
From 1962 to 1993, Joan and Ernest lived and worked in Fort Worth, Portland, Oklahoma City and Kansas City while Ernest was working in Zoos in those cities. During this time, Joan worked regularly as a secretary for the Portland Police Department and as secretary to the Director of the American Nurses Association in KCMO.
Joan and Ernest were fortunate to be able to travel widely during these years to Africa, Europe, Benelux countries and Australia – Joan always counted the 21 days in Australia as her favorite.
In 1999, Joan and Ernest moved back to Rendon to retire and take care of Joan’s mom and dad.
Vacations with friends to New York to see Mama Mia on Broadway, New Mexico, Las Vegas, Branson, MO, California - driving Hwy 1, the pacific coast highway - were high points during retirement.
Joan was thankful when, in 2015, her long-time family physician, Dr. Lisa Abbott, diagnosed her with kidney cancer – she caught it early - subsequent removal of her left kidney resulted in 6 yearly follow ups with no evidence of cancer.
Joan felt so lucky to be able to visit with her high school friends during retirement.
It is noted that Joan was world-renowned for her lack of patience, not holding back her opinion and a knack for telling it like it is. She always told you the truth even if it wasn’t what you wanted to hear.
Joan was 76 years old and is survived by her husband of 57 years Ernest Hagler, brother David Grubbs, nephews Clayton Grubbs and Gunner Hagler and loving pets Tinker and Ripley. Joan also counted Teresa Patterson, Stacy Scobee, Jordan and Chase Turner as family.
Because our pets give us unconditional love and enrich our lives, in lieu of flowers, I would be honored to have donations made to the Arlington Humane Society.
