Joel Estevan Martinez, born August 29, 2001, in Belen, New Mexico, passed away in his father’s arms on November 18, 2024, in Houston, Texas, after a courageous battle with osteosarcoma cancer. He was 23 years old.
Joel was diagnosed on March 10, 2022, and faced his illness with strength and resilience. He was a student at the University of New Mexico, studying General Science, and he worked as an RF Test Technician. This role allowed him to travel to incredible destinations like Washington D.C., Hawaii, and Alaska.
Joel split his time between New Mexico and Texas, deeply cherishing his roots and the connections he shared in both states. He was passionate about hiking, music, soccer, and spending time with his brothers, who were his closest companions.
Joel is survived by his mother, Angela Marie Jones, her husband, Jonah Jones, and his father, Michael Anthony Martinez, and his wife, Gosia Martinez. He is also survived by his sisters, Rachel Lucero and her husband, Joe Lucero, Emily Martinez, and Melody Judson and her husband, Patrick Judson; brothers Timothy Martinez, Elias Martinez, Salomon Martinez, Aaron Martinez, and Zachary Martinez. Joel’s legacy of love extends to his grandparents Jake Martinez, Janita Martinez, and Ruben O Bustos; girlfriend, Sade Aragon; five nieces and four nephews; beloved uncles Jake Martinez, Albert Martinez, and John Martinez; aunts Christine Roybal, Teresa Lafler, and Julie Martinez and their families; cousins, step-siblings, extended family, step-grandparents, and countless friends. He was preceded in death by grandmother Julia Carmen Bustos.
Joel will be remembered for how much he loved his family and his ability to find happiness in the little things. He had a great sense of humor, was down-to-earth, and, like all the Martinez men, was stubborn in the best way possible. Joel had a calm, steady presence and always stayed true to himself and the person he wanted to be.
Joel’s memory will forever live in the hearts of those who loved him.
