Cynthia “Cyndi” Kay Hurst Sekerke, 61, went to the arms of Jesus on Monday, November 5. Cyndi’s greatest love in life was teaching. She taught children in Bible Study Fellowship (BSF), Sunday school, and mission friends and adults at Northwood University. Cyndi possessed a truly generous spirit and continuously shared her time and her faith with her friends, family, and community.
Cyndi was born and raised in California, and after graduating from
California Baptist University in 1979, she served as a Baptist Journeyman Missionary in Oaxaca, Mexico where she taught at a Christian school for missionaries’ children. Next, she taught elementary school in California, where she met and married Wayne Sekerke, her husband of 32 years and a former serviceman in the United States Navy. In 1984 the Navy took the family to Texas, where she taught bilingually at Sam
Rosen Elementary School in Fort Worth. In 1988 another Navy transfer brought the family to New Orleans, where Cyndi taught at Glade Elementary School in La Place, LA., while earning a masters of education at Southeastern Louisiana University.
After Wayne retired from the Navy in 1992, the family returned to Texas, and Cyndi began teaching at Erma Nash Elementary School in Mansfield. The same year, Cyndi began teaching as an adjunct professor at Northwood University, where she would stay for the rest of her career. She brought her love of the humanities to the classroom and delighted in introducing her students to the arts through “semi-required” field trips to the Kimbell Museum.
Cyndi is survived by her husband Wayne, daughter Allyson, parents Ken and Doris Hurst, sister Kendra
Smalley, step sons Keith and Stosh, and many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. A celebration of Cyndi’s life will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, November 20th at Fielder Church South Oaks Campus, 5925 US Hwy 287, Arlington, TX 76017. Memorial donations may be made to (BSF) bsfinternational.org
