Annon Spann

December 2, 1946 — July 13, 2015

Annon Janell Holloway Spann: Born on December 2, 1946 – went to be with our Lord and Savior on Monday, July, 13,2015. Funeral: 10 am Thursday, in Skyvue Victoria Chapel. Burial: Skyvue Memorial Gardens. Vistation: 6-8 pm Wednesday at Skyvue Funeral Home. . She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald Derwood Holloway, Sr., and Mary McCarty Holloway; and is survived by her daughter, Julie Spann (Arlington); her son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Julie Spann (Hewitt); her grandson, Jackson (Hewitt); her sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Frank Rejsek (East Bernard); her brother and sister-in-law, Derwood and Tanya Holloway (Decatur); and dozens of cousins and extended family members.
Annon Janell Holloway Spann was born in Goose Creek, Texas; first of three children born to Don and Mary Holloway. Family always called her, “Annon,” but since most people outside the family had trouble with her unusual name, she shortened it to, “Ann.”
Ann always loved art and music. She won an art contest in 5th grade and her painting was displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. She continued to make all types of arts and crafts throughout her life, everything from hair bows to scrapbooking to hand-painted porcelain dolls. She also loved to decorate and loved being a native Texan. She loved almost all kinds of music, but especially Elvis Presley. Her very first dog in 1957 was named, “Teddy Bear,” after the Elvis song. Her last dog was named, “Presley.”
At 18, she met the love of her life, Michael Gayle Spann. They joked on their first date that if they ever married, her name would be, “Ann Spann.” They married six weeks later on December 19, 1965, and had two children: Julie and Shane. She taught them to love music. After 38 years of marriage, she lost Mike to cancer on February 22, 2004, and she never quite recovered from his loss.
Ann loved her Lord Jesus with all her heart. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 121. She found it when Mike had a heart attack in 1987 and read it to him every day during his recovery. “I lift my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
She suffered many trials in her life, but she also had great joys in her life, such as getting to see Elvis in concert in 1975 when he came to Fort Worth, congratulating her son on being selected as Firefighter of the Year for rescuing two teens from flood waters, and seeing her daughter have the honor of singing our National Anthem before a Texas Rangers baseball game.
She could be very resourceful. She once covered an old sofa with nothing more than a bolt of discounted fabric, rubber bands, and a glue gun! One winter’s day when Julie was in 6th grade and Shane was in 4th grade, she announced we’d be camping out in the living room, roasting hotdogs and marshmallows in the fireplace and sleeping on the floor by the fire, singing songs and telling stories. It wasn’t until years later we realized that they couldn’t cover the electricity bill that month, so she just made it into something fun. She loved old movies like, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and “Splendor in the Grass.” One of the things that thrilled her heart was hearing Shane play songs on the guitar and ukulele, like “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” But she especially loved hearing the songs Shane wrote himself.
Her greatest joy of all, though, was her grandson, Jackson, who called her by her favorite name of all, “Grannie Annie.” She was SO grateful to Shane and his sweet wife, Julie, for giving her Jackson. She was so very proud of him. Even when her memory was fading and she couldn’t remember the names of her own children, she always knew Jackson’s name.
Whether you called her Annon, Ann, Aunt Annie, Grannie Annie, Mom, Sis, Cousin, or Friend – she will be missed. She was loved. She was generous. She loved her family and her friends, and her Lord. Her heart was broken over the current state of affairs in the world, and she often wept and prayed when watching the news. Her heart was also broken over losing Mike. She often said she just wanted to be with him again.
Though we will miss her, we know with assurance that she is with her sweet Lord Jesus, and with Mike. Before Mike passed, he said to her, “It will only be a blink and we’ll be together again.” And we can celebrate because that blink is now over. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, Ann and Mike are together forever now. And she is finally healed, truly happy, and at peace.
