Dominion Speller

August 22, 1924 — April 5, 2015

Dominion was born August 22, 1924. She was one of thirteen children, born to the late Joseph and Estelle Broomfield Speller. She was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa. and graduated from Kensington High School.
After graduation Dominion joined her mother, Estelle Speller-Johnson and her older sister, Kathryn Ragsdale, in the family business; Acme Employment Agency.
Eventually her sister, Kathryn decided to leave the family business and devote her time, energy and love to her husband, Milton and five children, Nicky, Sidney, Freddie, and Lorraine and Kathy.
Dominion worked side by side with her mother, Estelle until her mother’s untimely death. Unable to maintain the family business and raise her two sons, The Acme Employment Agency closed its doors.
Dominion then committed the majority of her remaining working years to the Senior Citizen Centers all throughout the Philadelphia area focusing mainly on programs and activities that would enrich the senior’s quality of life.
Dominion devoted all of her life to the welfare of her sons, Andrew J. Speller and David L. Speller, her remaining siblings, Joseph Speller, Estelle Speller and Kathryn Ragsdale, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, Troy and Nichole Speller and great–grandchildren, Caitlyn, Derek and Jaide.
Dominion had a very special relationship with her cousin, Hilda Harris. They enjoyed doing a host of social and parental activities together with their children, David and Valerie.
Dominion had three church families. From a little girl to young adulthood she was a member of Dauphin Street Baptist Church located in North Philadelphia along with her mother and siblings.
As an adult, Dominion became a member of Grace Baptist Church, located in the Germantown Area of Philadelphia,Pa. There she was an active member in several ministries within the church; Senior Choir, Foreign Missions, and Women’s Guild with her dear and lifelong friend, Mrs. Peggy Goffney.
In the last 12 years of Dominion’s life she relocated from living with her oldest son, Andrew in the Philadelphia area to living with her youngest son David and his wife Alicia in Vestal, NY. During this time Dominion became a member of Beautiful Plain Baptist Church where she befriended a new church family, especially one family in particular; The Covington’s, Joe and Esther and their three beautiful children; J.B., Frank and Brittany and dear friend Acquanetta Young. Dominion slowly over time assumed the role as one of the church mothers.
Dominion: Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt, Cousin and Friend, we love you and will always miss you.
Scripture: I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord shall give me at that day.
